Artistic research & Discourse

We are committed to the qualitative development of the art form Young Dance. Formats for artistic research/research are an important building block here. Our studios are characterized by the fact that artistic research questions are examined together with children. In laboratories, on the other hand, artists conduct research in an open rehearsal setting to which young audiences are occasionally invited.

In 2026, for the first time, we have the opportunity to offer a residence: In cooperation with FELD Theater, we are awarding a research contract in the field of intergenerational theatre work.

All formats have in common, without being able to pursue a question without printing a premiere. This increases the joy of experimentation, leads to unexpected alliances, shifts aesthetic boundaries: In this way, high-quality and courageous work is created. We award contracts to Berlin artists and transnational teams.

The artistic work is embedded in discourse and further education events. We are convinced that promoting aesthetic excellence also means tapping into current, relevant discourses and deepening them. In this sense, we organize specialist days and symposium events (e.g. as part of the FRATZ Symposium). Furthermore, we started the programme series Werkstätten Junger Tanz in 2025 - it focuses on specific fields of work and is aimed at dance creators, multipliers and mediators.

In our blog, texts by experts and young perspectives on the topics negotiated are regularly published.

Completed projects

In 2021, Nasheeka Nedsreal and Cintia Rangel conducted research on how decolonial approaches can be implemented in the work for a very young audience. This resulted in the production "Flip-Flop", which won the Berlin IKARUS Prize of the jury of experts as the best children's play and tours internationally. Other laboratories were “The superpowers of previously uncelebrated superheroes - aka Queerlab” (2020) with Caroline Alves, Iury Salustiano Trojaborg, Mareike Jung and “TAH DAM!” (2020) with ASSITEJ South Africa. Discussions on this topic took place, for example, as part of the symposium "Race – Class – Gender" / FRATZ International 2020.

Previous specialist days were, for example: “The blurring of borders” (2023) - exchange on intergenerational dance and the handling of age information with theatres or similar; “Young Blood” (2023) - Perspectives on dance for young audiences in training with dance accomplices; Equity in Dance (2023): Strategies for power-critical diversity in dance; “The Other Body? Symposium on Dance and Racism” (2020) curated by Nora Amin with dance accomplices.
