Theater Strahl

A place worn and designed by many.

Founded in 1987 as a freelance theatre group, Theater Strahl has established itself over the last 38 years as one of the pioneering stages for contemporary and sophisticated theatre for young audiences. For more than 30 years - until 2023 - the Kulturcentrum Die Weiße Rose in Schöneberg was the permanent venue of Theater Strahl. In addition, the former gymnasium in the courtyard of the Kulturhaus Schöneberg has been used as a stage for smaller productions and rehearsals since 1998. Since 2013, Theater Stahl has been using another former and listed double-decker gymnasium on the grounds of the Berlin Ostkreuz Youth Hostel. It was converted into a centrally located theatre for young audiences with two venues and foyer building in 2020-23 and ceremoniously opened in the 2022/23 season. Theater Strahl also performs throughout Germany and internationally, follows invitations to children's and youth theatre festivals and is regularly nominated and awarded for theatre prizes.

After careful research, Theater Strahl develops plays for people from the age of 12 who deal with perspectives, fears, wishes and abilities of young people and place them in their social context. In this way, an entrance into the world of theatre is created for first-timers. Young people are involved in piece-finding and development. As a result, youthful perspectives and themes resonate on stage in a variety of aesthetic forms. Theater Strahl gives space to these forms and ideas, experiments with media, music and masks, combines theatre, dance and performance and spares neither classics nor classrooms.

An important facet of the work of Theater Strahl are the theater educational offers. From accompanying workshops and school collaborations to TheaterJugendClubs and cross-generational theatre projects, creative spaces are created for the audience.

Theater Strahl's goal in the future is to abolish even more the boundaries between art and mediation, between a theater for adults and the theater for young audiences and to make a theater for young people between 12 and 120!
