Our dance ambassador Mira on Jasmin Ihraç’s “Small Big Jumps”
Mira Hülsmann is 14 years old and, on behalf of Offensive Tanz, attended the performance ‘Kleine große Sprünge’ at TANZKOMPLIZEN. She wrote down her impressions for our blog.
It starts right away. The spectators take their seats in front of the still empty stage and the excited children's voices slowly fade away. But before the dance and the music begin to fill the room, the audience is also given another task. A wish for the world, captured on blank paper. Various thoughts, colorfully thrown together now in a box on stage.
And then the music swells, while the drummer handles the instruments on the edge of the stage and forms his own dance for people's hearing in an experimental way. When the four dancers finally begin to fill the stage with their movements, it seems as if they are a person. So coordinated. So safe. Waves of the same sea, gusts of the same air. Situations and landscapes also crystallize out of the acting dance. With some imagination sparkling volcanic mountains begin to rise from the black ground, desert sand flows around the wooden boxes and the atmosphere freezes to weightlessness.
The dancers who create all these images around them trust each other. The audience notices it. Everyone notices it. The four fight their way through time and space, impressed and frightened at the same time by the powerful forces of nature on earth. Curiosity drives them forward, fear makes them retreat again. They keep each other away from danger in order to face it immediately themselves. Hands tug arms back, feet hurry forward. Protect the other and yet be the first there at the same time. Wild movements to loud music. Hesitation. Carriage. Falling down. Get up again.
The dance tells a story and the daring jumps, movements and sounds immerse the room in breathless waiting for the next step.
Every now and then fragments of text fly over the stage, children's voices. They talk, ask questions. How far is it until you even come to the end or is there even an end to it? How far is it to Mars on foot? It's not about the answers to these questions, no, it's about the questions themselves. Traveling through forest and water, the dancers seek a way to save nature and find the last tree in the world.
Finally, the collected notes are stapled to the lines stretched over the stage and create their own universe of desires.
